Ansel Butler

Bio

Ansel is an Atlanta-based artist who began his artistic creations at a young age. He was always encouraged to enroll in various art programs by his parents. These programs included The Jocelyn Art Museumâs Youth Artist Program in Omaha, Nebraska while competing in various art contest throughout his formative years like The NAACP~ACT SO (Regional and National Competitions) during high school.

Though Ansel seemed destined early in life to become an artist, his career did not initially take him to an easel or paint brush. Instead, Ansel became part of corporate America. He struggled with the thought of creating art full time for years and in many ways the path taken helped him to become not only a better artist, but also a better businessman in the world of art. Having worked over 10 years in Information Technology and Medical Consulting industries, Ansel created art during his spare time.

In 2003, Ansel began receiving more requests for his commissioned artwork which required all of his spare time to fulfill. Ansel discovered a market primarily for athletes in the NFL, producing portraits of players and their families. By now, it was simply a matter of time.

In March of 2005, Ansel left the corporate world to focus his attention on the world of art and has not looked back. Due to his intrinsic ability to capture the expressions, times and emotions of events and people, Ansel is steadily coming into his own.

Ansel's work represents a new style of art from his exotic use of colors, as well as his ability to use a washed technique for a more classic look in some commissioned pieces. His versatility in subjects and mediums allows for a welcoming escape into the unknown. Some will discover a place of serenity while others will find that his work offers a sense of joys or special times yet to be shared.

Ansel's art is a gentle reminder of the things that touch many lives. This includes a cultural blend of historical and musical places and people. Ansel likes to challenge his skill using a broad range of mediums and surfaces that he often mixes to achieve a complex finish. Never looking to be "pigeon holed" in any particular genre of art, Ansel produces a variety of styles by also mixing acrylic, oil and airbrush on canvas, or creating wood carvings or reliefs by burning images into wood. At times, Ansel has even painted, carved and burned his wooden imagery in a colorful, yet dimensionally pleasing relief of a variety of subjects.

Ansel's series on The Negro League Baseball Legends started with "Giants," and has grown into commissioned works for league greats such as Willie Lee, former team member of the K.C. Monarchs from 1955 to 1959. Also Red Moore of the Elite Giants, 1939 to 1941 and Jessie Mitchell of the Black Barons, 1954 to 1955 as well as the K.C. Monarchs from 1955 to 1959. Ansel has the ability to create almost life like creations using a unique wood burning and reliefs painting from various wood grades. He uses both hard and soft wood grades and selects the clearest grade available (which is C or better in most American mills). His choice of woods varies over 50 different grades from sources all over the world including areas like West Africa and Malaysia.
